What Are Seashell Urns?
The handmade all-natural Laguna Urns include inlayed seashells (often referred to as mother of pearl) in intricate designs to create beautiful resting places for our loved ones.
The seashell material comes from the inner lining (nacre) of various mollusk shells, pearl oysters, and abalone. Nacre has served to protect the sea animal from bacteria and parasites and is a layer of calcium carbonate crystals, silk proteins and various other materials to create an array of color that reflects beautifully in light.
How Are Seashell Urns Made?
- Harvesting & Selection: premium seashells are hand selected for the Laguna Urn Collection.
- Cutting, Shaping & Coloring: the thick iridescent inner nacre layer is cut into shapes using precision tools and, depending on the urn design, color will be added using a proprietary process that includes natural dyes and heat.
- Inlaying & Assembly: skilled artisans carefully place and bind the seashell pieces by hand on the urn, creating intricate mosaics.
- Polishing & Finishing: the urns are then sanded and polished to reveal vibrant colors and to help ensure a smooth and reflective surface.
